The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations. Its predecessor was the international meteorological organization established in 1873. It was officially renamed the World Meteorological Organization in 1950 and became a specialized agency of the United Nations in 1951. The purposes of WMO include promoting cooperation among countries, working together on meteorological and hydrological observations, and promoting the standardization of meteorological observations.
