The Democratic Party of Japan is currently the largest opposition party in Japan. It is a new Democratic Party of Japan formed on April 27, 1998 by four opposition parties, the former Democratic Party of Japan, the civil affairs party, the friendly new party and the democratic reform coalition. It is now the party leader (representative of the Permanent Secretary General's Committee) is Hai Jiangtian Wanli. The Democratic Party calls for the establishment of a free and secure society, insists on opposing the prime minister's visit to the Yasukuni Shrine and avoiding provoking conflicts with neighboring countries.
