The National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) is one of the intelligence agencies of the United States. It was established in 1961 in Virginia and is subordinate to the U.S. Department of defense. The responsibilities of the NRO include designing, assembling and launching reconnaissance satellites, collecting and analyzing intelligence collected from space shuttles and satellites.
