Cork University, formerly known as Queen's college established in 1845, is one of the oldest universities in Ireland and a member of the famous Irish National University Union. In 1997, the University officially changed its name to its current name. Cork university is a research-oriented comprehensive university, and its annual research funding is the largest among all Irish universities. Cork university enjoys a high reputation in the teaching and scientific research of basic science and engineering, especially in the fields of biotechnology, biomedicine, computer and information technology, food science, photonics and nanotechnology. It has gathered many international scientific research institutions, such as national Microelectronics Research Center, national food and Biotechnology Research Center, Biological Science Research Institute, Environmental Research Institute, photon Research Institute and informatics research center.
