The European Southern Observatory (ESO) is an astronomical research organization, founded in 1962 and headquartered in Garching, Germany. Its member states include 14 European countries and Brazil. It mainly studies astronomy in the southern hemisphere, and most of its telescopes and instruments are located in Chile.
