Smithsonian Institution The Smithsonian Institution is a collection organization of museums and research institutions in the United States. It has the world's largest museum system and Research Consortium. Most of the facilities of the institution are located in Washington. The Smithsonian Institution was established in 1846 by using the legacy of British scientist James Smithsonian to the United States. Now the funds mainly come from the U.S. government.
