The United States Geological Survey (USGS) is a scientific institution of the U.S. government. It was established in 1879 and is subordinate to the Department of the interior. It is mainly responsible for research related to biology, geography, geology and hydrology, including research on topography, natural resources and natural disasters in the United States.
