The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations, which is mainly responsible for the safety of maritime navigation and the prevention of marine pollution caused by ships. It was founded on January 6, 1959 and was originally called "intergovernmental Maritime Consultative Organization" , headquartered in London; May 1982, more current name; As of September 2012, there were 170 full members and 3 associate members.
