The foreign and Commonwealth Office is a British government department responsible for promoting overseas interests. It was formed by the merger of the foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1968. The head of the Department is the Secretary of state for foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, that is, the "foreign secretary", which is regarded as "the three most prestigious positions" together with the chancellor of the exchequer and the home secretary.
